Notes and miscellany on Battle of the Imports

We went to the 'strip and had a good time. Weather was great (about 55-60degs) and there were a lot of cars. Not mentioned on my other page were cars I didn't run against. There was a 3rd Gen RX7, which I figured should be running 13's, who had a best of 14.1. A stage III '90+ 300zxTT (automatic), also was in the low 14's. NOS Integra's, turbo civics were in the low 14's, with a wild Integra Type-R (license plate said 13-SEC), ran high 13's (unknown mods). Another serious Integra had a turbo and was running 13.3's. There was also a mundane looking Rabbit ('85 or so) running 13.4 / 13.5.

Other VERY interesting notes are : As near as I could tell, the RWD cars were the only fast cars (under 14.5) without SLICKS!! Coincidence??? If you look at my timeslips, you'll see that in almost every case, I was behind these guys at the 60-foot mark. Somehow Paul was able to get 2.0sec 60-foot times with "crappy" 195/60 S rated tires, while I got horrible (2.4 - 2.5sec) 60' times with my "better" 205/50 V-rated tires.

This was definitely a "Gen-X" crowd, as the average age was probably 22, and 95% of the cars were FWD. In fact, of the street cars, the four of us, two other Z-cars and the RX-7 were the only RWD cars I saw racing. Not-so coincidentally I think, is the fact us RWD guys are older than the average of the racers. Also six of the seven of us were near or under 14.0.

My friend Paul was running CLOSE times with a rotary, blown, NOS'd drag truck that had been trailered (12.1 vs 12.3)!! Mike and Ron made three runs each, Ron getting low 13's with his V-8Z, and Mike got two 14.2x and a 14.1x at just over 100mph.

All in all, a GREAT showing for four older Datsuns, all four of us among the fastest cars there, and certainly the fastest of the cars running in the same condition as we drove down there (no swapping to slicks, just drive down, run, then drive home). What does this mean? On the street, RWD rules the day - as long as it's dry :-).
